Therapy can be a scary concept at first. You are asked to be open and honest to someone who is, for lack of a better term, a stranger. You’re asked to share your hurts, scars, regrets, and fears. This is not an easy task…but it is not impossible.
Everything starts with a call to get an appointment set up. During the phone call we will talk and it is a time to see if this is the appropriate fit for you. If the fit is good, an appointment will be set and you will come in to complete necessary paperwork and your assessment. This appointment lasts approximately 60-90 minutes.
Following the initial appointment, the second session includes identifying goals that you would like to work on. Remember, these are your goals and they will be used to guide on-going therapy sessions. We will work at integrating and regulating your emotions and physical self. We will develop tools for you to utilize in times of pain. We will challenge negative thoughts and behaviors, and identify positive options. These sessions are 45-50 minutes in length and occur weekly or every other week depending on your need.
You can expect to experience new emotions and thought processes, but the path to get there can cause some uncomfortable emotions at times. Along the way trust will continue to grow. I will help you to challenge negative beliefs. At times I will challenge you to step out of your comfort zone. This is all to assist you in healing your wounds.
Confidentiality is a must in therapy. Your information and topics discussed in therapy sessions is not disclosed to anyone without explicit direction from you. I strictly abide by HIPAA rules and regulations. I am mandatory reporter however, and as such, have a responsibility to communicate if you disclose child or dependent adult abuse, or if you appear to be a danger to yourself or to someone else.
My background as a therapist includes working in both mental health and substance abuse settings. I utilize a trauma focused approach. I am trained in cognitive behavioral and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT/TF-CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT).
